Herbold: Roxhill Bog update

The Roxhill Bog Committee has been working on this issue for many years attempting to save this important wetland. You can read a detailed timeline and history compiled by the Committee here.

Roxhill bog, at the Longfellow Creek headwaters, is actually a fen, defined as “open wetland systems that generally receive some drainage from surrounding mineral soils and are often covered by grasses, sedges or reeds.”

After 66 years at the lake, Angle Lake Cyclery is moving to White Center

Angle Lake Cyclery, which opened at 20804 International Boulevard in SeaTac 66 years ago is moving to White Center. The location was once a Hudson Car Dealership.

The business, which has been selling bikes to multiple generations of riders will open at 9241 16th SW in late March. Owner Dale Clark said he grew up in the business which started by his father Rex.

Angle Lake Cyclery will employ three people at the new location.

The Running of the Beavers fun run/walk coming up March 28 will benefit the Ballard High School Foundation

Join us for the 4th annual Running of the Beavers to benefit the Ballard High School Foundation. The run will start and finish at beautiful Golden Gardens Park along the Ballard waterfront. You’ll enjoy stunning views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains on this fast, flat course. The finish will take you right by the famous Beaver Pond at Golden Gardens. Escape the city as you run/walk along the shores of Puget Sound and help raise funds for the Ballard High School Foundation.

Property tax bills coming: Changes in education funding lead to higher property taxes in 2020

Two changes in our state’s school funding formula will lead to a 13.7% increase in property tax collections in King County for the 2020 tax year. Overall property tax collections for the 2020 tax year are $6.3 billion, an increase of $767 million or 13.7% from the previous year of $5.7 billion.  Total County value increased by 5.92%, from $ 606.6 to $642.5 billion

The increase in taxes is primarily due to two changes in education funding made by the Legislature; an increase in the statewide education levy, and increased authority for school districts to collect local levies:

Douglas James Sykes

Douglas James Sykes passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019. He was a lifelong resident of West Seattle and at the age of 58 left us much too soon due to undiagnosed High Blood Pressure. He was preceded in death by his Father, Claude A. Sykes and his Mother Sarah J. Sykes (nee McGillivray). He is survived by his sisters Claudia Irvine and Diana Parmele and his brother Joel Sykes. Along with them, he will be fondly remembered by cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Sheriff's office offers update on Bob’s Burgers incident in SeaTac

King County Sheriff’s Office detectives have closed the Bob’s Burgers case and forwarded it to the SeaTac Prosecutor for consideration of charges for up to nine people for False Reporting, RCW 9A.84.040, a gross misdemeanor

The participants in this hoax took up considerable law enforcement resources with their call to 911 and their subsequent false claims of being victims of crime.
