Organic control for Chafer Beetles

This is the sixth in a series of columns prepared by the staff at the award winning West Seattle Nursery.  The Nursery is open for shopping, following COVID guidelines and they offer an array of trees, shrubs, bedding plants, garden supplies, decor and gift items. They are located at 5275 California Ave SW and you can find them online at https://www.westseattlenursery.com

A few months ago, we were getting frantic phone calls from customers. “Who or what is digging up my lawn?” It turns out that their soil was home to a host of European chafer beetle larvae. These larvae, aka grubs, are a popular food for crows, raccoons, and other animals, and those critters damage the lawn as they dig them up.

Public hearing scheduled for moratorium on new work-release facilities while city of SeaTac reviews zoning

information from the City of SeaTac

The SeaTac City Council passed an ordinance yesterday establishing a temporary “moratorium” on the creation of new work-release facilities in the city.

The moratorium temporarily pushes “pause” on any organization submitting an application for permits to establish a new work-release facility in SeaTac. While the moratorium is in effect, SeaTac staff and City Council will review SeaTac’s zoning regulations and determine what, if any, updates to the regulations are necessary. The moratorium took effect immediately and will end after one year, unless the City Council passes an ordinance to end it sooner.

A public hearing on the moratorium is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26 during the Regular Council Meeting beginning at 6 p.m.

First day at Denny International Middle School was a model for the District

The Seattle Public School District returned to full in person instruction Sept.1 with only 500 students out of 53,000 opting to stay home.  The district provided 30 tents to some of the 104 schools in the system with 36 more requested for some who might opt for outdoor instruction. But at Denny International Middle School the number was nearly the complete student body. The full attendance number is still being determined.

Former Atlas Heating building burns for the second time in White Center

By Ruby Tuesday Romero

At approximately 8:25am, on the southwest side of 98th and 17th ave sw, thick black plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the back portion of an abandoned structure, formerly Atlas Heating.

Employees from Gerber Collision & Glass had become aware and the call to emergency services was made.

At this time, there were no visible flames. As the calls to emergency services were being made by a few on-lookers, the flames quickly began to rise from the rear portion of the building. The building adjacent, housing Merry Maids and a dental office, were notified by bystanders and urged to move vehicles and evacuate.
