Duke's on Alki closes after a quarter century reports Eater.com

Duke's Seafood on Alki, a well-known waterfront dining spot in West Seattle, has closed permanently after a quarter-century in business. According to a report by Eater Seattle on April 3, 2025, owners Duke and John Moscrip announced the sale of the restaurant on Thursday, April 3.

The Moscrips cited significant financial challenges as the reason for the closure. "As with many other businesses in West Seattle, Duke’s Alki has struggled to recover post-pandemic and with the lengthy West Seattle Bridge closure (30 months), forcing us to miss three full summers," they stated, according to Eater Seattle. The article notes that although the bridge reopened in 2022, the revenue lost during the closure period had created long-term financial strain for the restaurant. Eater Seattle reports that despite surviving the pandemic with "struggles and temporary closures," Duke's on Alki could not overcome these ongoing difficulties.

King County faces dire outlook with potential loss of hundreds of millions in federal funding

King County is facing a significant crisis due to potential federal funding cuts and new conditions on existing grants, according to a presentation by Budget Director Dwight Dively to the King County Council Health, Housing and Human Services Committee1. The situation poses a severe risk to numerous county services and could impact every community in the region2.

At the Tuesday committee meeting, Dively outlined the grim implications of possible federal actions, including the illegal attempts by the Trump administration to reclaim already allocated funds3, and the imposition of new, unacceptable conditions on long-standing grants3. King County's operating budget relies on over $200 million in federal funding, with additional federal funds flowing through the state, and federal funding often anticipated in future capital budgets4.

Ken's View: YOU are the media

By Kenneth Robinson

Managing Editor

Citizens,

You are the media

It all changed when so-called “home computers” were available to everyone. Until that development, what we called ‘The media” was comprised of major city newspapers, community newspapers, radio stations, TV station and magazines. It was through those ‘mediums’ that got our news, opinions and degrees of information. This is what we called the Main Stream Media.

Unhappy with something you read in a paper? You could write letter to the editor. Didn’t like what you saw on TV? Stop watching. There were mechanisms for any and all to voice or at least act on their own opinion.

Now, there are a million channels, podcasts, and ’shows’ like Fox News that give vent to individual opinions and point of view.

Pat's View: Compromise not crazy is a better way

By Patrick Robinson

The nation is struggling I believe because the crazies want to take the wheel.

To the extent that we let them look where that got us.

They appear to be taking us toward the edge of a cliff.

I use the term “crazy” here in the sense that extreme views are not the way America runs best.

Crazy cuts both ways and there are plenty of examples from both sides.

People on the left, I mean the far left out of a sense of kindness and yes, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion pushed the idea of trans folks being allowed to compete in the sport of their chosen gender. That’s crazy.
