Jennifer's View: Pet Sounds

By Jennifer Carrasco

Nah, it's not the Beach Boys. It's the march (only I can hear them) of thousands of black ants crawling up the corner of my West Seattle kitchen. It's the scratching of Wolf Spiders trying to escape my bath tub. Or the rasp of a tiny black cricket behind my bookcase.

I've fostered a mostly live and let live philosophy in my house and garden, No pesticides, no herbicides nor chemical fertilizers. I've lived to 83 without too many major health disasters and don't want to invite trouble with anything other than a quick spritz of Clorox or a swipe of vinegar.

OpEd- Taking back our streets: A bold approach to Smash-and-Grab prevention in Seattle

Seattle is facing a costly and disruptive crime wave: smash-and-grab burglaries. These brazen acts, where vehicles often ram storefronts, are not only causing significant financial damage but also eroding our sense of security. The estimated total cost of burglaries in Seattle from August 2024 to July 2025 is projected at $235.6 million for 2025, covering direct property damage, stolen goods, law enforcement costs, and lost economic productivity. While this figure encompasses all burglaries, smash-and-grab incidents are a particularly frequent and costly subset, with individual incidents often causing $15,000–$40,000 in combined theft and damage. Annually, these specific crimes could easily exceed $10–20 million.

The impact is felt keenly by businesses across the city, especially cannabis retailers and smoke shops, which have been notably targeted. We’ve seen vivid examples:

Robert Elwood Symonds

On July 29, 2025, Robert Elwood Symonds (Bud/Bob/Papa Bob) passed at home, surrounded by family, his long-time trusted personal caregiver, Hospice of the Northwest, and a troupe of caregivers from Eden Home Care. He said, “There are too many ladies here trying to take care of me!”  Before his incredible care squad sprang into action, all Bud needed was Meals on Wheels (his favorite time of day), and his deck, where he sat to enjoy nature and snooze.

Suspect in West Seattle eluding incidents appears in court; Bail set at $100,000

Zachary R. McCreary, the suspect in a series of alleged reckless driving and eluding incidents, including one originating in West Seattle, made his first court appearance today in King County.

Prosecutors had requested a bail amount of $250,000, but the judge ultimately set bail at $100,000 after finding probable cause.

The first appearance hearing is a preliminary step and differs from the higher burden of proof required for a felony charging decision, which King County Prosecutors anticipate receiving from police investigators in the coming days. McCreary's next court date, a second appearance, is scheduled for August 8, 2025, at 2:30 PM.
