Burien Animal Shelter hit by severe vandalism; Leaders call incident an ‘Act of Hate’

CARES Animal Shelter, a non-profit organization serving as the Animal Care & Control authority for the city of Burien, has been struck by severe vandalism and what leaders are describing as a deliberate "act of Hate". The incident targeted the shelter's vehicles, resulting in extensive damage.

The vandalism occurred at the shelter's location at 909 SW 151st St. According to reports from the organization, the destruction inflicted on their truck and van was substantial: SIX tires were slashed, three sets of windows were shattered, and a large passenger mirror was destroyed.

Shuldiner unanimously selected as new Seattle Schools Superintendent amid budget crisis

The Seattle School Board has unanimously selected Ben Shuldiner as the new Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools (SPS). Shuldiner, who was voted in during a public board meeting on November 5, 2025, is set to officially begin his tenure in November 2025.

His selection followed a nationwide search that reviewed 41 candidates and included final interviews with two unnamed candidates who held leadership roles elsewhere. The selection process drew significant community input, with more than 3,000 students, staff, and community members contributing their thoughts.

A Leader with Deep Educational Roots

Shuldiner brings over 25 years of experience in education to the role. Most recently, he served as the Superintendent of the Lansing School District in Michigan since 2021. His background also includes service on the New York City Board of Education.

Abandoned boat makes its last trip; Left in the boat launch parking lot it is finally gone

The long strange saga of the boat  that was abandoned in the Don Armeni Boat Launch parking lot has come to a close.

On Wednesday Nov. 5 Bankers Towing out of Renton came to lift the boat up with slings, and put it on a flatbed trailer to be taken away by Republic Services.

Seattle Council moves to boost neighborhood cleanup funds by $100,000; A Cleaner Alki central to discussion

Seattle City Council is moving forward with a Council Budget Action (CBA) that would increase appropriations to Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) by $100,000 GF (General Fund) to enhance community cleanup services through partnerships.

The budget proposal, known as CBA SPU-002-A-2 (also cited as SPU-002-A), is titled: “Increase SPU by $100,000 GF for additional community cleanup services through community partners”.

Kennedy Catholic's home Class 4A football state playoff opener wound up being scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Renton Memorial.

The Lancers normally play their home games Saturdays at Highline Memorial.

Kennedy Catholic, the North Puget Sound League 4A champions with a 7-0 division record, will host the Lake Washington Kangaroos of the Kingco League.

Evergreen of the Kingco's 2A division, meanwhile, has been scheduled for a 6 p.m. Thursday home non-playoff game against Nathan Hale at Highline Memorial.

Highline and Foster have yet to have their non-playoff finales announced.

Foster went to Sultan for a Class 2A playoff last week and took a 28-0 loss.

Highline missed out at the 3A level of the Kingco League.

NWSA weekly report highlights major volume declines; Vessel lifts fall over 42%

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), representing the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, released its Weekly Volumes & Metrics Report today, detailing continued year-over-year volume declines for the weeks ending October 17th and October 24th. The report noted several sharp drops in activity, with Weekly Vessel Lifts recording the most significant decrease.

For the week ending October 24th, volume metrics compared to the previous year’s October weekly average showed drastic reductions.

The most substantial drop was recorded in Weekly Vessel Lifts (containers loaded on or off a vessel, including empty moves). The 17,733 lifts for the week ending October 24th represented a 42.6% decline compared to the October 2024 Weekly Average (30,923). This metric was also down 42% when compared to the October 2024 weekly average. Additionally, vessel lifts were down 19.1% week over week.

Speed cited as cause in three-car hydroplaning collision on Southbound I-5; one injured, freeway shut down for over two hours

A personal injury collision involving three cars occurred on Southbound I-5 near the West Seattle Freeway (milepost 163) on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 12:11:23. The Washington State Patrol (WSP) identified speed as the cause of the three-vehicle incident. The crash resulted in one injury and led to a roadway closure lasting two hours and eight minutes.

The collision began when Vehicle 1, a 2003 tan Toyota Camry sedan, was merging onto southbound I-5 from the West Seattle Freeway in Lane 1 of four. Vehicle 1 subsequently hydroplaned and traveled across the southbound lanes of I-5.

Vehicle 2, a 2022 white Toyota Tacoma pickup, was traveling in Lane 2 when it struck Vehicle 1. Immediately following, Vehicle 3, a 2016 grey Honda Fit hatchback traveling in Lane 3, overcorrected and subsequently struck Vehicle 2.

Seattle commits up to $8 million in emergency funds to avert local food crisis amid federal SNAP uncertainty

The City of Seattle is dedicating up to $8 million in emergency funding for local food banks and meal services to ensure food security for residents facing disruptions in federal Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The announcement follows the unanimous confirmation by the City Council of Mayor Bruce Harrell’s Limited Civil Emergency.

The City plans to allocate up to $1 million per week in assistance, continuing this support through the end of 2025 or until the federal government fully restores SNAP funding. This action comes as uncertainty looms regarding the amount and timing of federal SNAP allocations.
