Seattle Public Schools (SPS) has officially launched a new districtwide cellphone procedure aimed at removing digital distractions from classrooms and creating a unified learning environment. The new guidance, which takes effect Monday, May 4, 2026, replaces a previous patchwork of school-by-school rules with a single, clear standard for every student in the district.

Superintendent Ben Shuldiner enacted the change as a procedure rather than a board-voted policy to ensure students have the "chance to think deeply, engage fully, and be present". The district describes cellphones as one of the most significant barriers to learning and focus in modern classrooms.

Recent regional varsity action saw a mix of dominant shutouts and high-scoring blowouts across baseball, fastpitch softball, and boys soccer.

One of the most lopsided baseball contests occurred on Monday, when Sammamish defeated Evergreen 34-1. In fastpitch softball, Tahoma showed similar dominance, posting a massive 24-0 shutout against Mt. Rainier and a 10-0 shutout over Kennedy Catholic. Seattle Prep also secured a high-scoring 30-10 win over Chief Sealth in softball action earlier in the week.

The soccer field featured several notable defensive performances and playoff implications. Foster earned a 2-0 playoff victory over Evergreen on Saturday, while Kennedy Catholic recorded back-to-back shutout wins against Kentridge and Auburn-Riverside.

The "Sycamore Log" Days

The journey began in the late 1890s with a simple wooden trestle wagon road across the tideflats. By 1902, the first true bridge across the Duwamish River arrived at Spokane Avenue. A second suspect is now facing potential charges in connection with a fatal April 9 home invasion in Belltown, just as 27-year-old Bradley Allen Might entered a not guilty plea for his alleged role in the crime.

While Might appeared in King County Superior Court on Monday, a judge also found probable cause to arrest a 34-year-old West Seattle man for investigation of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. Prosecutors expect a formal felony case referral for this second suspect next week.
