Community Pulse: From Ancient Canopies to Beachside Bazaars, Your Late-May West Seattle Guide
As we slide into the final days of May, the peninsula is buzzing with opportunities to connect, create, and care for our neighborhood. From green sanctuaries to local courts, here is how the coming days shape up.
Midweek Stewardship and Civic Dialogue
The action begins on Wednesday, May 27, with a double dose of community betterment. Nature enthusiasts can gather at Schmitz Preserve Park for an educational trek through our neighborhood’s historic 53-acre old-growth forest. Guides will lead walkers along the quiet pathways, sharing insights on local avian populations, native greenery, and the delicate work of restoring the local creek. Just up the hill at the Southwest Library, residents can clear out their desk drawers for a cause.
A technology-focused recycling drive will accept unwanted gadgets, including computing towers, mobile phones, and sound systems. The donated gear will undergo data sanitization and refurbishment, eventually finding its way into households that currently lack reliable digital tools.
On Thursday, May 28, the focus shifts to civic coordination at the Delridge Community Center. Neighborhood safety advocates and curious residents will gather with police leadership, including Southwest Precinct Captain Krista Bair and FIFA preparation lead Dan Nelson. The discussion will cover pressing security issues in West Seattle and South Park, with a heavy emphasis on how our municipal services are preparing for the massive influx of international soccer fans.
Friday Night Celebrations
May 29 offers two vastly different ways to welcome the weekend. Over at Louisa Boren STEM, families and allies will gather to usher in Pride month with an energetic neighborhood party featuring outdoor activities, interactive entertainment, and lively tunes. Meanwhile, Kenyon Hall offers a feast for the senses with a dark, avant-garde transformation of classic cinema. A quartet of live musical acts will collaborate on an uninterrupted, brand-new soundtrack to the vintage silent film Nosferatu, augmented by modern, sound-responsive visual projections that breathe surreal life into the historic footage.
Saturday on the Shore and the Court
Saturday, May 30, belongs to competitors and collectors alike. Athletic residents can head over to the Southwest Athletic Complex, where the local booster club is hosting its second annual pickleball tournament. The day promises spirited court action and plenty of neighborhood rivalry. For those preferring a gentler seaside stroll, the Alki Bathhouse will host a waterfront assembly of regional creators. More than thirty Pacific Northwest artisans will line the beachside area, presenting a curated selection of hand-molded clay pieces, custom jewelry, regional artwork, and unique items designed for pets. ###
Sunday Markets, Melodies, and Makers
We wrap up the month on Sunday, May 31, with three distinct highlights. The heart of the Junction will host its customary open-air market, offering the usual array of fresh-harvested agricultural goods, local culinary creations, and vibrant floral arrangements. Over on Harbor Avenue, a local clay studio called Potterings is marking its first full year of operations. To celebrate the milestone, instructors are opening their doors for a series of quick, complimentary workshops where attendees can learn to shape their own clay candleholders on a first-come, first-served basis. Finally, the weekend concludes on a harmonious note at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church. The Seattle Metropolitan Singers will take the stage for their annual spring presentation, delivering a deeply moving choral performance focused on the diverse expressions of romance and companionship.
