Martha McKenzie

My mother passed away peacefully this morning (9/27/2006) around 8:30am at the Odyssey Health Care Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada. She will be cremated in Las Vegas and her remains will be sent to Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery in Seattle, Washington where she will join my father. She was a loving and caring mother and lived a long and productive life. Martha will be fondly remembered by all her family and may friends.

Martha McKenzie born June 11, 1914 in Seattle, Washington and passed away September 27, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Harry M. Lewin

April 3, 1917 - October 7, 2006

Harry was born in Seattle, the youngest of Bruce and Lillian Lewin's six children. He graduated from West Seattle High School and worked as a truck driver in the family business prior to being drafted into the Army to serve in Europe during WWII. After the war, Harry began what would be a long career with the City of Seattle. Harry married fellow West Seattle High graduate Jennie Hughes in 1954 and fathered three daughters. After a long battle with breast cancer, Jeannie died in 1974 and Harry was left to finish raising three teenage daughters.

Beavers lose by one

As rival games go, the game between the Ballard Beavers and the Roosevelt Roughriders was a tough defensive battle that came down to a single point.

The difference was a blocked kick that prevented Ballard from a tie score in the third quarter. They eventually lost to the Roughriders 7-6.

On the extra point, Kenichi Sato's kick was blocked by the Roughriders.

DeLora Marie Willis

DeLora Marie Willis, longtime Ballard resident, died Sept. 27 in Springfield, Ore., of age-related causes at age 98. She was born Mar. 10, 1908, in Halfway, Ore., to Henry and Anna Koger Anson. She married Glenn Willis on Nov. 13, 1928 in Okanogan and moved to the Ballard-Crown Hill area in the 1940s.

Principal gets $25,000 grant

Chief Sealth High School Principal John Boyd has received a prestigious leadership award which includes a $25,000 grant to support the learning success of all students at the school.

Every year, the Alliance for Education presents the Thomas B. Foster Award for Excellence to outstanding secondary school principals and the schools they lead.

Boyd is a 1982 graduate of Chief Sealth and is in his third year as principal.

Fire chief's raise questioned

In a move that is being questioned by some fire district taxpayers, the North Highline Fire commissioners raised long-time Chief Russ Pritchard's salary to $198,000 per year at their Sept. 7 meeting.

Pritchard will receive the 57 percent pay raise only until he retires on Dec. 31.

"It's a severance package," North Highline (Fire District 11) commission Chairman Ron Malaspino said in defending the raise.

Local tennis professional Steve Walters again offers area tennis lessons at outdoor locations this summer. Walters, certifed Pro 1 by the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1986, has coached at some of the world's top tennis resorts and academies in Florida, Caifornia, Texas and Canada. Also he traveled on the men's professional tour, including the 1988 U.S. Open, as a traveling coach for world-ranked pros and nationally-ranked juniors.

Kennedy 58, Tyee 6

Kennedy soared to another big win Saturday, Sept. 30 -- taking a 58-0 lead on the Totems before they finally scored six in the fourth quarter.

Bobby Gentry scored first for the Lancers on a 5-yard run and the kick for the extra point failed, but Nate Williams ran for two points after Lonzell Hill struck on a 9-yard run.

Gentry then scored on another 5-yard run and Jacob Prato scored his first of four-straight kicks for the extra point.
