Doing the right thing isn't easy, but Chris McCorkle has a heart to make it happen

White Center man given 2018 Citizenship Award by King County

Chris McCorkle is what you might call an "everyday hero" and his act of selflessness was recognized on May 31 by King County with a 2018 Citizenship Award by King County, Washington in a ceremony at the King County Courthouse, Seattle, Washington, for his effort to intercede in a hate crime.

His father, Greg McCorkle who is a photographer and editorial contributor to Westside Seattle wrote the following about his son. Chris offers his own account of the incident below.

A father offers his thoughts about his son

We all would like to think that in a pinch we would "Do the right thing".

We read about these individuals frequently in stories online and local publications. They perform acts of courage and sacrifice. Human nature shows us that when a possible threatening event happens we go into Fight or Flight mode. Most of us will choose Flight. It's a self-preservation thing. Nothing to be ashamed of. It's hard wired into our psyche.

Holy Rosary School observes Corpus Christi with a first time procession

450 students took part as they closed the streets

Holy Rosary School observed Corpus Christi, (latin for Body of Christ) in first ever procession of the Blessed Sacrament involving 450 students from Holy Rosary School on May 31.

The event meant closing the streets in the block around the church. That included California Ave SW briefly as the students led by Father Matthew Oakland carried a canopy and burned incense.

The students sang led by Musical Director Janet Mudge. She sang into both a microphone and a walkie talkie so everyone could stay synchronized.

About Corpus Christ

Corpus Christ is the central sacrament of the Catholic life. It's part of a cycle of "feasts" that begins with Easter when Jesus rose from the dead and then Pentecost when the holy spirit came upon the apostles and sent them forth to begin the church.

Foster High School's Rios grabs silver in 2A state tennis play

Foster High School's Ana Rios captured second place at the 2A girls state tennis championship singles tournament held at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus on Sat., May 26.

Rios dropped a 6-3, 6-1 championship match to three-time defending champion Danya Wallis of North Kitsap.

The Bulldog made her Viking opponent struggle hard at times with booming returns.

With the score tied at three-all in the first set, Rios was in solid contention, but Wallis used slicing shots to move the Foster player around the court and induce net returns or out of bounds shots on the way to a 6-3 set win.

Unable to set up for successful hard returns, Rios fell back in the third set. Wallis defeated Rios 6-2, 6-2, in the finals of West Central District as part of the Bulldog ace's only losses this season.
