Water Taxi will sail on special event schedule for SR 99 tunnel festivities Feb. 2

Those who are among the 100,000 people signed up to attend this Saturday’s SR 99 tunnel grand opening festivities now have the option to sail in on King County Metro’s West Seattle Water Taxi. The Water Taxi will operate on a special event schedule from 5:55 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to help folks coming from West Seattle and surrounding areas get to the action.

Additionally, free parking for approximately 250 cars will be offered at the Pier 2 parking lot located at 2424 Harbor Ave SW (across the street from the 7-Eleven) with continuous shuttle service to the Water Taxi.

From Pier 52, riders can walk across the Marion Street overpass to access Third Avenue and board routes 1, 3, 4 or the D-Line, all of which take passengers to Seattle Center.

Highland Park Action Committee asks: Should HPAC Support Camp Second Chance permit extension?

The Highland Park Action Committee (HPAC) has been requested to support the permit extension by two community groups, Martin Westerman, Director of Seattle Green Spaces Coalition (SGSC) and CSC Community Advisory Committee. We have also received emails from neighbors about issues with encampments and RVs  in the neighborhood not being addressed.

Please take our short anonymous survey by Feb. 14, 2019 so HPAC executive committee can understand the wishes of the neighborhood in responding to this request.

Phil Tavel announces his bid for Seattle City Council

West Seattle activist Phillip Tavel has announced his run for Seattle City Council District 1. The seat is currently held by Lisa Herbold.

His campaign Kick-off is set for Thursday Jan. 31 at 6pm at Easy Street Records in the Alaska Junction in West Seattle. The event begins at 6 (speeches begin at 6:30) and ends at 7:30pm.

"Seattle is in some serious need of new ideas and better leadership to serve its people more effectively. I think Seattle can do much better and I intend to do something about it, " said Tavel in a post on Facebook.

Hate letter sent to Burien businesses prompts police investigation

A hate letter that was sent to homes and businesses in Burien last week has prompted an investigation by the King County Sheriff's office.

They are looking into who is responsible for sending the letter. Our news partner Q13 Fox News reports that the letter asks for Black men and women to run for Burien City Council and it says, “We need to make it possible for (ICE) to deport the aliens because our quality of life is going downhill at a rapid rate.”

The letter includes a contact number of a television station in Houston, Texas. Burien Mayor Jimmy Matta was also mentioned in the letter.

Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery opens in White Center; Grand Opening party is Feb. 2

Opening a new art gallery is a challenge anywhere but for Jake Prendez, White Center seemed like the perfect place. 

The Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery located at 9414 Delridge Way SW. is a multi-use space, hosting art exhibitions, arts workshops, a retail space for artists and artisans, as well as a space for events such as spoken word, music and arts related lectures.

Their Grand Opening party is set for Feb. 2 from 5pm to 9pm.

Seattle Parks and Recreation invites input on design of new park at 48th Ave. SW and SW Charlestown St. in West Seattle

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is hosting a booth at the West Seattle Farmer’s Market, 44th Ave. SW and SW Alaska St., on Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is an opportunity for the community to learn about the new park project at 48th Ave. SW and SW Charlestown St., meet the design team from Cascade Collaborative and provide input on the design of this new neighborhood park.
