Man shot near White Center goes to hospital; Assailant at large

Seattle Police and Fire Emergency crews were called to a scene in the 9400 block of 16th SW near White Center on Monday following a shooting that sent one man to the hospital with serious gunshot wounds to his back. Capt. Pierre Davis said, "It appears this was a situation where the shooter and victim knew each other but we don't have many other details yet."

One witness at the scene making a service call said "I heard four shots, and then I saw a dark maroon BMW SUV with tinted windows head north away from the scene." Capt. Davis said they have not yet confirmed that vehicle description or any description of the assailant who remains at large. King County Guardian One helicopter was over head and police were wearing bullet proof vests and carry assault weapons on scene, just in case the shooter was still in the area

On-the-spot-poetry soon available in "Listen To The Trees"

By Tim Robinson

He comes to Seattle for a few weeks just to write poems. He takes time off from a teaching job in Austin, Texas to fly up to the Emerald city, stay with friends to type up poems about West Seattle. What's in it for him? Nothing but joy, it appears.

His name is Sean Petrie, 48, a law professor with a deep love of poetry and a yen to write poems in a soon to be published book about West Seattle called LISTEN TO THE TREES.

The poems are from local residents' ideas. Sean asks “What do you love about West Seattle?”  They tell him about an event, a place, a time or personal experience from living on the "Duwamish Peninsula".

Swim lessons and falling in love

By Jerry Robinson

Publisher Emeritus

Warmer weather makes me think about getting outside in the sun running, swimming and playing like I did as a kid. We were always outside it seems, in those days, but compared to today I think we were healthier, even through the Great Depression.  We did not have the distractions of electronic games. After our house chores we were off to adventures unknown. We ran barefoot anywhere and everywhere. I don't think we sat down for more than a minute. Well at least I didn't. I was probably ADHD. I just didn't know it.

This is not about those days but more about how significant getting outside was for me at that time. Our social network was the Peninsula Park Pool. Friends were made, gossip exchanged and swim lessons were learned all summer long. We fell in love, we showed off and generally ran around like kids are supposed to run around.

Free! Free! All Books are free

By Jean Godden

In Seattle, all books are free. That's the way it's been at the Seattle Public Library since its early days.

The Seattle Public Library can trace its roots back to 1868, a mere 17 years after the Denny Party landed. First book checked out:  a new copy of Mark Twain's "Innocents Abroad." Because that first library had mixed success, a new Ladies Library Association was formed two decades later and launched the Seattle Public Library in 1890.

Opened in the Occidental Building on First Avenue, the Library was designated an official city department, designed to receive 10 percent of the amount raised by city licenses and fines. However, its early days were marred by crises, tight budgets and moves into ever cheaper digs.

Shooting near White Center Starbucks sends young man to hospital

According to the King County Sheriff around 12:35 on Saturday multiple callers contacted 911 stating someone was riding a bike near SW 100th and 16th Ave SW and they fired a gun shot striking another person. That location is home to the Starbucks and it was closed and an upper window in one of the garage style doors appeared to be broken. A door repair truck was on site to effect repairs but it was unclear if it was related to the shooting.

In an unconfirmed Facebook comment on the incident an eyewittness said  "We were in the Starbucks drive through as this happened. I saw the kid limping into a car in front of us on 16th. I hope he’s ok! Starbucks employee said a bullet went through the store."

Deputies arrived didn’t find a victim or suspect.

Later a victim showed up at Highline Medical Center in Burien with a gun shot wound to his leg.

The case will be forwarded to Major Crimes to work.
