It's lemonade season again! Owen's lemonade stand is open

It may not make headlines, or be breaking news, but for lots of kids across the nation and here in West Seattle making and selling lemonade is way to demonstrate initiative, and a willingness to work to make some money.

We noticed via Facebook that a young man named Owen is just such an entrepreneur and  “Owen’s Lemonade Stand” at the corner of Beach and Charlestown. is open today, Sunday, July 25th. 2:00-4:00.

Reviews from his Saturday run are pretty good so if you get a chance, want some refreshing lemonade and want to help out an industrious young man, stop by.

Flood mitigation work along South 180th Street expected to start next month

information from the City of SeaTac

Work is likely to start in August for a project that will aim to decrease flooding along South 180th Street in SeaTac.

Last year, The King County Flood Control District awarded grant money to the City of SeaTac to study the solutions for this area’s flooding issues. A $125,000 grant check from King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove was presented to SeaTac.

Fast forward to this year, Road Construction Northwest Inc was awarded the project by the City of SeaTac at the Council Meeting on July 13. Road Construction Northwest offered the lowest bid for this much-need project. Northwest Construction’s big was $50,523 more than engineer expectations.

Martin C. Dirks

The extraordinary life of Martin (“Marty”) C. Dirks of West Seattle, a family man, adventurer and master storyteller who also made significant contributions as a civil engineer, ended on July 16 in a Seattle hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87.

Marty split his time between Seattle, where he was born on April 9, 1934, and Camano Island, where he was raised. Highlights of his teen years were chronicled in the Seattle Post Intelligencer by his father, Clarence, a sportswriter-turned “City-Bred Farmer” columnist. Marty’s mother was Cleo Coons.

Seafair is coming to you in Des Moines, Burien and White Center on Saturday

Hydros, clowns, commodores and more are doing a south end caravan

Though the Seafair celebration that normally happens every year has been postponed again, that doesn't mean you'll miss everything. Seafair is coming to Des Moines, Burien and White Center on Saturday in the form of a caravan.

Seafair advises that you should "be on the lookout for the Seafair caravan this Saturday morning including the Clowns, Pirates, Commodores, Boat Club, Parade Marshals, and other surprises.

The caravan will begin around 10am at Highline College (but don't head there, that's just a rally point) and then wend its way north ending at Steve Cox Park in White Center around Noon. Here's the route if you want to see the caravan passing through your area.

Satterberg: More than one person being shot per day in King County; Gun violence is public heath crisis

196 people shot in the first half of 2021 as shootings continue to rise;
Pandemic, protests, and prevalence of guns are all likely contributing factors

information from King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg

196 people have been the victims of gun violence in the first half of 2021 according to King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg who released a report on Thursday.

“We are in a public health crisis, we are in a public safety crisis in those communities where gun violence is highly concentrated,” said Satterberg. We collect this data with the understanding that we can share it with not just law enforcement but with the community at large and also with people who are interested in working with young people who are at risk of being involved in gun violence. This data helps us think about how to best direct investments into affected communities.”
