Pat's View: We need a scaled approach to crimes, drugs and homelessness

By Patrick Robinson

I think we are in a new era of crime. By that I mean it's well beyond just stealing stuff to sell it, though that happens and is facilitated by sites like Offer Up and Craigslist.. We are in the era of angry crimes. It's not enough to just take your property.. there's no elegant cat burglar thievery here.. this is smash and grab writ large. They want to mess you up and hurt you because you have a better life or because they simply have nothing to lose.

It’s painfully obvious that the era of synthetic opioids is fueling many of these crimes. When heroin is unavailable the prevalence of Fentanyl either on its own or more commonly combined with Xanax or other drugs is at levels that are killing an unprecedented number of people.

Make the trip to the Greenbridge Cafe in White Center; A hidden gem with a world class chef

If you’ve ever had lunch at a Nordstrom store you know how fine tuned and unique the flavor combinations are. Believe it or not, that same sense of ingredients, flavors, preparation and presentation are available in White Center.

The Greenbridge Cafe 9901 8th Ave SW may be just bit out of the way but the trip is worth it. Where else in the West Seattle/White Center area will you find a Turkey and Honey Smoked Bacon sandwich? Or a Cuban Pork sandwich? Or grits (blended with polenta) and Poblano sauce?

This is world class food a couple of miles from you.

Easy Street Records remakes their restroom in unique style

By Ruby Tuesday Romero

Son Doung has been a mixed media artist for years now, but only in the past decade has he begun to work with paint. Offering high contrast in his realistic portraits, the final products always seem effortless, natural, and demand attention from the viewers. The influence from his professional background in graphic design shines through in his vividly colored backgrounds and heavy black overlays.

Specializing in portraits, Duong has the ability to take a subject and add an ominous tone, almost creating mythical creatures. In his iconic rendition of Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell (on the outdoor south wall of Easy Street), Duong evokes pain and glory-with the use of just four colors. Periodically on that wall album art will be brought to life by muralists and then painted over for the next new release, but Son Duong’s portrait of Cornell has remained, no matter what album is coming soon.

It was a good 'Night Out' for West Seattle

After missing a year due to the pandemic, many neighbors in West Seattle relished (with actual relish) the chance to get together with neighbors, share a potluck meal and fellowship after being relatively isolated for so long.

Down on Henderson Street near the ferry dock, a group of long time neighbors gathered and swapped stories, shook hands and cooked burgers, with everyone in a celebratory mood.

Meanwhile up in the West Seattle Junction they tried something new. The entire business district was alive with music as buskers from around the city showed up to entertain, and have some fun as hundreds of people stopped briefly to enjoy the music and drop a few dollars in their open guitar cases.

Jerry's View: White Center -- I Wanted It To Change

By Jerry Robinson

Publisher Emeritus 1920 ~ 2014

EDITORS NOTE: What follows is an excerpt from the Autobiography of Jerry Robinson entitled Listen to your Father which was published in 1996. Hence some of the references to "current" events are now out of date. Nonetheless it provides some insight into what White Center was like in the 1950's

It was my first month as Publisher, Editor, Reporter, Salesman and Janitor of the White Center News. It was January of the year 1952. White Center was just emerging as a bustling shopping center on the southern border of Seattle, and remnants of its salty past still clung to its merchant body.
