Ken's View: A summer story...That 38-pound salmon

By Ken Robinson

Managing Editor

I could say it was the day my reputation in the family as a fisherman was established. I was fourteen.

It was  August I think. In that summer, days blended.

We met Dad’s friend, Jim C. In the grocery store parking lot. His passenger, also fourteen, was a kind of lumpy kid. He looked like he didn’t want to be there.

Dad followed Jim’s Ford station wagon south to cross the Narrows Bridge in Tacoma. The drive was a blur of green trees and some patches of water. It seemed like it was never going to end.

On a map, the route looks like a fish hook, with the point in Seattle, the bend at the Narrows and the shank tracing Highway 101 along the Olympic Peninsula.

The trip took about four hours. The peanut butter sandwich meant for breakfast and lunch was consumed by the time we rolled into the narrow street in Neah Bay.

Driver taunts officers and leaves

Information from Seattle Police Blotter

#2025-171054/Southwest Precinct/Second Watch/F1:

At 6:45pm Friday, officer observed a white Chevy Malibu with no license plates outside a closed business. The officer backed his patrol car into a nook nearby to radio for backing units to conduct a suspicious stop. The driver re-appeared, entered the vehicle and backed up to the officer’s car, forcing the officer to back completely up to a fence to avoid a collision.

The suspect continued to back up, completely blocking the officer in and stopped.

The officer radioed for assistance and multiple units arrived.

As backing units were arriving, the suspect took off, eluding police officers.

The officers did not pursue but the suspect then conducted multiple U-Turns, driving back and forth near the officers, taunting them. The suspect eventually left the area.

Mode Music and Performing Arts benefit show set for June 22 at The Neptune Theater

On Sunday, June 22, Mode Music and Performing Arts will host its biggest celebration of the year: the School’s Out Benefit Show — an all-ages concert spotlighting the young musicians, educators, and local artists who help shape the future of music in our city.

With a 22-act lineup featuring Mode students, current and former teachers, and some of Seattle’s most exciting performers, the event highlights something rare and powerful: students sharing the stage with the very mentors who taught them to play.

The concert takes place at The Neptune Theatre, offering many young musicians their first opportunity to perform in a major Seattle venue — a meaningful moment for performers and families alike.

The show raises funds for Mode’s private music lesson scholarship program, which helps ensure access to high-quality music education for kids throughout West Seattle and beyond — regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
