Ken's View: Things I learned from my father

By Ken Robinson

Managing Editor

I call this Things I have learned rather than things I was taught because my father taught more by example than by pedagogy.

He showed me how to work. He did this by working and showing work and its results.

He showed me the value showing up on time for work no matter how late I was out the night before.

He showed the importance of doing what I agreed to do, to follow through.

He showed me how to tell those I love that I love them and to show it in various ways.

He showed me how to solve a variety of problems without losing my temper. I rarely saw him angry or lose control.

He showed me how to be respectful of others and to be open to understanding differences in all people.

He showed me how to use humor to diffuse conflicts when appropriate.

He showed me how to think before acting.

Evergreen High School final farewell brought back many memories

By Patrick Robinson

As an alumni of Evergreen High School, class of 1969, it was surprisingly emotional to walk the campus on it's Final Farewell day June 14.

Hundreds came to meet old friends and see the buildings they came to know before it is torn down. The new campus is still under construction just east of the current one and will open next fall. You can learn more about the new campus here.

High School for many people creates such a concentration of memories that when you revisit the places where they were formed, they come flooding back. Seeing a few of the people who remembered you back then, hearing conversations that include years of transition that came much later than my own provided genuine perspective.

West Seattle/White Center 'No Kings' protests see strong turnout

Groups gathered in the Admiral junction, Alaska Junction, on Delridge Way and even outside Arrowhead Gardens to share their opinion of the policies and actions of the Trump Administration on June 14. The demonstrations, a subset of the over 2000 No Kings protests taking place nationally, saw a strong turnout with plenty of signs, and lots of drivers honking support and agreement. White Center's version was a little different in that they dubbed it "Kick out the Clowns" and encouraged those participating to dress up in their best clown attire.

One participant, Cindy Gruber, out with her husband of 55 years said, "I'm here for my children, my grand children and my great grand children."

National protests will see local turnout too June 14

The primary Seattle area focus for the No Kings protest against the actions of the Trump Administration are set to take place at Red Square on the University of Washington campus, starting at 12:00 PM. Another demonstration is planned at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, running from noon to 3 PM. These protests are part of a broader effort to counter the military parade in Washington, D.C., which coincides with Flag Day and President Trump's 79th birthday.

The movement, organized by Indivisible and other advocacy groups, aims to reject what they see as corrupt, authoritarian politics. Protesters are expected to gather in over 1,500 cities nationwide, including more than 80 locations across Washington state. The event emphasizes nonviolent action, with participants encouraged to de-escalate potential confrontations.

SR 509 Expressway extension set to open in 2025, significantly enhancing regional connectivity

A critical initial segment of the new SR 509 Expressway, part of the extensive SR 509 Completion Project in King County, is expected to open to traffic this summer. This first mile of the new four-lane expressway is poised to significantly enhance regional mobility and provide a vital alternative to the frequently congested I-5 corridor in south King County.

This particular section, known as the "SR 509/I-5 to 24th Avenue South – New Expressway Project" or Stage 1b of the overall completion plan, involves the construction of the first mile of new SR 509 Expressway, along with new I-5 ramps, new interchanges, and a new bridge. While this segment is anticipated to open next year, some associated construction work will continue into 2026.

In the central courtyard, a stormwater swale curves through the heart of the new Evergreen campus like a natural stream — bridges included. Hundreds of plants are getting added to the landscaping. It's looking very... green!
