Sound Transit confronts staggering $20-25 billion shortfall, launches "Enterprise Initiative" to secure ST3 future

Sound Transit is facing a formidable financial challenge, with its ambitious ST3 mass transit expansion plan grappling with an estimated $20 to $25 billion affordability gap over the next two decades, the agency announced at its August 28, 2025, Board of Directors meeting. In response, the Board officially launched its "Enterprise Initiative," a comprehensive agency-wide effort to bring the ST3 program back to affordability and deliver on its promises to voters.

Jennifer's View: The Seattle Defrost

By Jennifer Carrasco

I've heard a lot about the Seattle Freeze, but never experienced it myself. When I arrived at 52, very broke and scared about surviving in Seattle , I was too focused about making a living to worry about a social life.  I lived for three months in my friend Carolyn's basement and before I knew it, I had a group of supportive friends who were Carolyn's friends. These friends were usually writers, dancers and visual artists. Since creative types are often considered peculiar and live below the poverty line, I was accepted as "one of them." My friend's shawl of buddies warded off my cold entry.

It was obvious that gallery sales would not be my financial support, so I took my portfolio to design firms and applied for murals and decorative painting projects. They told me "You are overqualified" (code for "you are too old"). Well, eff you,I thought I'll start my own decorative painting business. Fire in the belly.

A missing link to your well-being

By Beth Dayo

Whether you’ve considered it directly or not, we all know our voice is the bridge between our inner and outer worlds. How we share and invite others into our experience. Because of this we mainly use our voice for others. Your voice is a lot more than that, and here is why you need to use it for your health!

From a physical perspective, we’ve all experienced events that created tension in the body — from childhood traumas to desk sitting, to stuffing down emotions to be an “acceptable” adult. These tensions stay with us, restricting the open spaces where sound once resonated. If you “can’t” sing or are terrified to sing, that isn’t your natural state — it’s a pattern you developed, shaped by tension that makes it feel true.

OpEd -Rethinking shoplifting: Beyond punishment towards a smarter, collaborative future

Shoplifting isn't just a nuisance; it's a complex challenge costing U.S. retailers over $13 billion annually. From the zero-tolerance policies of Singapore, where offenders face fines, jail, caning, and deportation, to European nations grappling with high rates due to economic pressures and organized crime, global approaches vary dramatically. While some countries view it as deeply shameful, leading to swift detention and deportation in places like Japan and South Korea, others in the West may treat it as a symptom of poverty or addiction.
