Small Business Saturday brings vital boost to West Seattle Junction

As holiday shopping season ramps up, West Seattle’s small businesses are preparing for one of the most important days of the year: Small Business Saturday November 29. For merchants in the West Seattle Junction and across the peninsula, the event is more than a shopping holiday, it can be a lifeline.

Why It Matters

  • Economic impact: Small Business Saturday encourages residents to spend locally, keeping dollars circulating within the community. Studies show that for every $100 spent at a local business, about $68 stays in the local economy, compared to just $43 when spent at a national chain.

  • Recovery support: After years of pandemic disruptions, inflation pressures, and ongoing construction challenges in the Junction, many shops rely on this day to balance budgets and sustain operations through the winter.

Pat's View: Wistful but grateful

By Patrick Robinson

We always had a big Thanksgiving.

Our family of five boys sort of meant we always had a big turkey and lots of side dishes, thanks to my mom who worked so hard.. but as I recall, my Dad was in charge of the bird itself. Always Sage Stuffing.. inside the turkey. Always the green beans. Always mashed potatoes, always a ton of gravy.

That was our way for many years, even after we grew up and my brothers had families of their own, we’d come to our Dad’s house for Thanksgiving. That reunion of family love was incredibly important.

It reminded us all of what matters, of who matters, of who knew us better than anyone else and still loved us.

White Center Food Bank launches end of year appeal

Information from White Center Food Bank

The White Center Food Bank is closing out a powerful year of community support, generosity, and partnership. Over the past several months, we’ve received incredible support from hosted food drives to financial donations and volunteer hours, all of which have helped us keep our community fed.

While SNAP/food stamp benefits have been temporarily restored, uncertainty remains and the demand on our services continues to grow. We were stretched thin even before these shifts, and we are actively working to ensure we can continue meeting the evolving needs of our community.

Bring gratitude to life this Thanksgiving

By Beth Dayo

Most people know gratitude is good for them and very few admit how often it feels impossible. Especially when life is falling apart, or even just when faced with difficult relatives and stress of family gatherings. If you’re someone who has been disciplined enough to establish a gratitude practice or journal, you’ve probably felt it contrived at times.

And yet appreciation is a natural experience, innate to our being human. So what gives? What's in the way of that, and how does gratitude practice help or hinder our natural appreciation?
