Doris Ina (Reed) BENCKERT 1924 ~ 2015

Born August 27, 1924 in Ellensburg, WA, the first child of Frank and Ola (Dewees) Reed, Doris Benckert passed away peacefully May 20, 2015 after a brief illness. She graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle in June 1943.

In March, 1949 she married Walter Benckert who had proposed marriage exactly one year to the day after they met. Their union was loving and strong for more than 66 years. Their only child, Pat, was born in 1958.
Doris was a long time member of the Audubon Society, Arboretum Foundation, West Seattle Garden Club and North American Rock Garden Society. For many years she gave lectures and taught classes in gardening. Doris and Walter started a nursery business in 1973.

Doris loved gardening, bird-watching, camping, and all things in nature. After Walter retired they both enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States, from Alaska to Maine.
A beloved wife, trusted companion and loyal friend, Doris will be missed by many. The lives of those who knew her were enriched by the warmth of her friendship.
Predeceased by her sister, Norma, Doris is survived by her husband, Walter Benckert of Seatac, WA, and daughter, Pat of Normandy Park, WA.
In lieu of flowers, Doris requested contributions be made to the Washington Park Arboretum Foundation or Medic One Foundation.
