Dr. Herbert B. Carroll Jr. 1920 ~ 2016

Dr. Herbert B. Carroll Jr., beloved West Seattle pediatrician for over 40 years, passed away peacefully February 28, 2016 at the age of 95 after a brief illness. He was born in Seattle on May 27, 1920, attended Broadway High School, the University of Washington, and St. Louis University Medical School. He served as a physician in the Army Air Corps, Chief of Staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital and opened his own pediatric practice in West Seattle in 1950.

Herb was a respected medical practitioner who treated generations of children. His relaxed and casual demeanor was an admired and calming attribute when interacting with his young patients. He was a keen observer with great insight and perspective, which contributed to his diagnostic expertise.

Herb met the love of his life, Hazel Ann Waters, in Pender Harbor, BC, and they recently celebrated their 72nd anniversary. Herb and Hazel were inseparable and enjoyed the most harmonious relationship during their time as husband and wife. They raised a close loving family of daughters, which has grown to include two more generations, who continue to gather for birthday dinners, holidays and vacations at Crystal Mountain and Vashon Island.

An avid outdoorsman, Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snow and water skiing with family and dear friends. A true lifelong learner, he stayed connected to his profession, texted his grandkids on his iPhone, traded stocks on his computer, and kept up on current events. Always ready to take on a project, he kept his cars, boats, and houses in top condition.

Herb was preceded in death by his daughter Suzanne Carroll and his sisters Marie Carroll King and Virginia Carroll Ream. He is survived by his wife Hazel, his daughters Ann Marie (Ward) Carson, Christy (Dave) Cruver, Wendy (Rich) Starrett, Cindy (Tom) Ridgeway, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
