'Save the Showbox' ends badly

By Jean Godden

You sort of knew that it would end badly and it did. The effort to Save the Showbox Theater misfired wildly and is now ending up costing us, the taxpayers, a lot of money, time, effort and missed opportunity.

The sad story began last year when the public first became aware that the Showbox Theater, a First Avenue music venue, would be torn down and replaced by a 40-story residential tower. Once alerted, music fans protested. Some 120,000 signed a petition to save the 80-year-old structure that had hosted musicians from Duke Ellington to Macklemore.

In response, Councilmember Kshama Sawant proposed an improper spot rezone, calculated to block the deal to sell the property to a developer. She further jeopardized the preservation effort by sponsoring rallies, printing posters and distributing talking points, disregarding rules that call for councilmembers to remain unbiased when making land-use decisions.

Bring on the flavors of fall

By Katy G. Wilkens

I love the change of seasons. Just when I get tired of using the same old ingredients, the weather changes, new foods ripen in the garden and I have new meals to try.

Tomatoes are still on the vines in my garden, though I will bring them in soon to ripen on the counter. They pair wonderfully with parsnips, which are ready for harvest. My fall spinach is also ready to harvest, after the summer hiatus when it is too hot for spinach to grow. My pepper plants are loaded with peppers, ready to stuff for a savory meal.

Food is more flavorful when you cook seasonally — that is, when you use the fruits and vegetables that are in season, harvested at the peak of ripeness. With flavorful foods, you can hold off the salt, which contributes to high blood pressure, kidney disease and heart disease.

Port gathers diverse maritime interests to protect endangered orcas by reducing ship noise

The Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma, Northwest Seaport Alliance, Washington State Ferries, NOAA, and the Puget Sound Partnership co-convened a workshop of a broad range of experts and interests to identify ways to reduce underwater noise in an effort to support a recovery of the endangered population of Southern Resident killer whales. Underwater noise can be harmful to Southern Resident orcas because it impedes their ability to use sonar to hunt prey and communicate.
