A major renter protection and affordable housing package moved forward on Tuesday when a King County Council committee passed the first of four pieces of legislation.

“This package of legislation is a major step in the right direction to protect the most disenfranchised residents in King County,” said King County Councilmember Larry Gossett, who championed the package. “If this legislation is approved, King County can be a model throughout the country on protecting renters, enhancing affordable housing, and mitigating the impacts of gentrification on longtime residents and those in need of affordable housing.”

Brought forward by Gossett and co-sponsored by Councilmembers Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Joe McDermott, the first legislation – passed by the Health, Housing and Human Services Committee – will take aim at creating a strategy to develop and retain affordable housing in Skyway and White Center.

(1) Highline "bricks"? Sounds OK but what to do with the thing once in your possession. Mount it? Frame it? Door-stop it? Make it part of your children's inheritance?

Yes Dad, they'd love you for that.

Probably hard and expensive to reclaim the bricks from the rubble, too.

I'm thinking about asbestos and who knows what else. A brick would end up costing a fortune for purchase. How about, as you said, a walkway like at Pike Place (I bought one for a long ago girlfriend)or the site of Lake Burien Grade School. I'd buy one of those.

(2) As you're heading east out of Burien on 518, could you please tell me the purpose/reason for the off-ramp to Des Moines Memorial? There's plenty of ways to access DM without spending how ever much was spent for that off-ramp. Lot of tax money spent.

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is investing in the maintenance of Westcrest Park and the Off-Leash Area (OLA). Over the past few years, the maintenance project has grown from a simple drainage improvement project to a $505,000 project that will address drainage, access and erosion.

To address the impacts to the community during construction, SPR is proposing establishing a temporary OLA north of the P-Patch at the park. SPR will present the construction project and temporary off-leash plan on Wednesday, October 23 at 7 p.m. at the Highland Park Action Coalition (HPAC) meeting. The meeting will be held at the Highland Park Improvement Club, 1116 SW Holden St. Seattle, WA 98106.

Oh, those big heads! Watching the battle between Herbold and Tavel unfold is a bit amusing.

And it is not easy to understand who is telling the truth. The incident where a ramshackle motorhome was parked in front of Herbold’s house, the one where the Tavel camp says she does not live, has a theatrical flair to it. Assertions from the Herbold camp that Tavel is a scofflaw is verifiable. Tavel shrugs off the charges. But he does the same with parking tickets.

Things we know about the candidates

Herbold is a terrific communicator, (much better than King County Council member Joe McHermit) and is boots on the ground in the community. But she made the business community mad with her support for a head tax and now they want to crush her.

The West Seattle Monster Dash is a 5k trail run/walk plus two Little Monsters Dashes on the Saturday before Halloween. The event features a raffle, race prizes, costume contests, and tons of fun! West Seattle Monster Dash benefits the South Seattle College Cooperative Preschool Program.

The event is set for Oct. 26 at Lincoln Park from 9 AM – 11 AM.

The Monster Dash has become a fall tradition for families and running enthusiasts throughout West Seattle and beyond. Last year we had 350 participants, 47 community partners and many families and community members attended to cheer on the racers and see the costume contest.

243 City Light customers were without power after a thunderstorm swept in and passed over West Seattle after 6pm on Friday night. The Arroyos were knocked out as well as two other pockets of outages. Some were expected to see power restored by 1am with others delayed until 5am.

Seattle Parks & Recreation (SPR) has announced that they are opening up additional showers and restrooms to Seattle Public School students and their immediate family. The newly available showers are at the seven SPR pools.   This is in addition to four community centers across the city that already make showers available to anyone who needs one.
