West Seattle drivers brace for three-week road closure as city upgrades aging water pump station

Drivers in West Seattle should prepare for significant travel delays as Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) announces a full road closure on a portion of Southwest Spokane Street starting next week. The closure, scheduled to begin September 24, 2025, is expected to last for approximately three weeks as crews work to modernize a nearly century-old water pump station.

The project focuses on the SW Spokane St Pump Station, a critical facility originally built in 1928 that supplies drinking water and fire protection services to parts of West Seattle. According to a notice sent to media, SPU has determined the aging station is at risk of failure during an earthquake, and many of its systems are in need of immediate repair or replacement. The upcoming construction work is essential to ensure SPU can continue providing reliable and safe services to its customers.

King County Council to vote Tuesday on DCHS reforms after damning audit reveals potential fraud

The King County Council is scheduled to vote this week on new legislation aimed at reforming the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) following a bombshell audit that uncovered widespread financial mismanagement, improper payments, and potential fraud. The vote will take place during a hybrid meeting on Tuesday, September 23, at 1:30 p.m.

The proposed reforms, introduced by Councilmember Reagan Dunn, come in direct response to the audit he called for in 2023. The investigation revealed what Dunn termed "a disaster," bringing intense scrutiny to the department. Key findings from the audit include:

A massive budget explosion, with the DCHS contracting budget growing from $22 million in 2019 to over $1.8 billion for 2023–2024.

Lax oversight, as nearly half of the organizations receiving county funds in 2024 were flagged as "high risk," yet monitoring was minimal.

West Seattle peace rally calls for unity

A call for peace echoed along the West Seattle waterfront on Sunday, September 21, as around 300-400 people gathered for the "Peace For All Rally and Human Banner Project". The event, sponsored by West Seattle Indivisible, was held to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace and advocate for peace at local, national, and global levels.

The rally took place from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM at 2130 Harbor Ave SW, a "retired" dock yard located just south of Salty's restaurant. A key feature of the event was the planned formation of a 1,000-person human banner spelling out "PEACE FOR ALL". The turnout was smaller than organizers had hoped, with each letter requiring about 100 people. That meant the word PEACE was the realized goal.

The event featured a diverse lineup of speakers, including Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, who delivered a powerful message of unity and resistance. He addressed the crowd, stating:
