West Seattle reclaims Huling Bowl in gritty 17–10 victory over Chief Sealth

In a clash defined by grit, pride, and neighborhood bragging rights, West Seattle High School edged out Chief Sealth International 17–10 in the 2025 Huling Bowl, reclaiming the coveted trophy in front of a packed crowd at the Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex.

The game opened with defensive intensity from both sides, as neither team found the end zone in the first quarter. But West Seattle’s senior quarterback Malik Thompson broke the stalemate early in the second, threading a 22-yard touchdown pass to wideout Jalen Cruz, electrifying the Wildcats’ sideline.

Chief Sealth responded with a methodical drive capped by a field goal, narrowing the gap to 7–3. But West Seattle’s ground game took over in the third quarter, with junior running back Isaiah Reed powering through tackles for a 14-yard rushing touchdown that extended the lead to 14–3.

Alki's future as 'Neighborhood Center' remains undecided after Council vote

Councilmember Saka unsuccessful in swaying a majority to exclude from Neighborhood Center consideration

A contentious proposal by District 1 Councilmember Rob Saka to remove Alki from a list of areas being studied for designation as a "Neighborhood Center" under Seattle's One Seattle Comprehensive Plan was narrowly defeated in a Sept. 19 city council committee vote. The amendment's failure means Alki, along with eight other neighborhoods, will continue to be evaluated for the new zoning designation into next year.

The amendment to the Comprehensive Plan resolution, Res 32183, was voted down, with Councilmembers Saka, Rivera, Kettle, and Council President Nelson voting in favor. Councilmembers Rinck, Strauss, Juarez, and Hollingsworth voted against it, while Councilmember Solomon abstained. A majority was required for the amendment to pass.

Alki Neighborhood Center designation sparks controversy ahead of final Council vote

The Seattle City Council's Select Committee on the Comprehensive Plan is heading into a final vote on September 19 that could determine the future of zoning in several Seattle neighborhoods for the next 20 years, with the community of Alki at the center of a heated debate. At issue is a last-minute amendment that would designate Alki as a "Neighborhood Center," a move that the Alki Community Council (ACC) says blindsided residents and was done without proper public process.

SPD Officer stops man From running over pedestrian; Suspect ran was arrested

Information from Seattle Police Blotter

Seattle Police Lt. Heidi Tuttle drove her SUV into a Prius on Friday, Sept. 12 to stop a man from running over a pedestrian.

“The Prius shot out from Southwest Othello onto 47th and he almost clipped my back panel,” said Lt. Tuttle.

Lt. Tuttle said she stopped her vehicle and watched the Prius swerve and almost hit another car head-on. The Prius driver then nearly ran over a pedestrian and almost hit three more cars.

She said it was clear the driver had his eyes on a man in the street.

“Once he crossed Fauntleroy to the east side of the street he gunned it towards the guy. The victim jumped out of the street,” Lt. Tuttle said.

Lt. Tuttle said the suspect then did “a three-point turn to go after the guy again.”

She then made the decision to drive her SUV into the chaotic scene to stop the Prius driver. She sped toward the Prius and slammed into him, pushing him off course.

UPDATE: West Seattle Bridge lights out due to vandal damage

Update 9/16/25

The Seattle Department of Transportation reached out with a few corrections:

  • Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has informed Seattle City Light (SCL) of the outage.  SCL is responsible for maintaining the streetlights, including those on the bridge.
  • The streetlights on the West Seattle Bridge are out because of vandalism, not because of deferred maintenance. Previous outstanding maintenance work was completed by SDOT as part of the structural repair work prior to the re-opening of the West Seattle Bridge.
  • The luminaires on the streetlights have all been upgraded with LED units since 2014.
