From Courts to Comedy: Xavier Smith brings weekly stand-up vibes to West Seattle

Xavier Smith’s journey from European pro basketball star to rising comedic force is anything but conventional. Now rooted in Seattle, he’s channeling that same competitive fire into laughter with his weekly stand-up showcase, They’re Just Jokes, every Wednesday at 7:30 PM at Jet City Labs (4547 California Ave SW, Suite A).

Smith’s evolution into comedy wasn’t a pivot—it was a revelation. After years playing professionally overseas including seasons in Spain and Italy), he returned to his hometown and found a new stage: the mic. What started as open mics in Seattle quickly escalated into a deeper pursuit, eventually leading him to New York City, where he sharpened his craft and absorbed the rhythm of the scene.

“Comedy gave me the same adrenaline rush as basketball,” Smith says. “But this time, I got to be fully myself. New York helped me find my voice. Seattle gave me the room to turn up the volume.”

Jennifer's View: Pregnant in Manila

By Jennifer Carrasco

During the year we lived in a big house on Taft Avenue in Manila, I gave birth to my son Carlos and I learned a lot about communal living with 13 people.

My best friend Norma and her partner Ben lived in one bedroom, our other friend Mancia Garchitorena lived in another bedroom, and our house girls Vacion, Charing, and my yaya Ophelia and a couple of cousins from Bicol Province slept on mats in the living room. Ric and I got the master bedroom.

West Seattle's newest culinary gem: Cave 17 brings gourmet pasta home

West Seattle just got a whole lot tastier with the arrival of Cave 17, a new ghost kitchen that's rapidly becoming the go-to destination for gourmet pasta enthusiasts. Located at 4611 36th Ave SW #2713, Seattle, WA 98126, this innovative eatery, which is  part of the Distinguished Foods Kitchen, is redefining comfort food with its bold, high-quality dishes.

The trio share a deep love for pasta and their local community. Cave 17 operates on a simple yet profound philosophy: "friendship, flavor, and the dream of bringing people together through food". While it functions as a ghost kitchen, specializing in takeout and delivery, the founders are dedicated to fostering a genuine sense of community, "one plate of pasta at a time."
