Rescuing the rescuers: A tale of two gentle giants on the ledge

In the quiet neighborhood of Arroyo Heights, two "lions"  found themselves in a very un-lion-like predicament on Thursday afternoon. Mia and Mattilda are Leonbergers, a massive German breed specifically bred to resemble the lions on the crest of the town of Leonberg, Germany. Known for their gentle temperaments and thick, double coats, these "gentle giants" usually spend their days serving as fire department therapy dogs, providing comfort to those in need.

On a recent Thursday afternoon, however, the roles were reversed. The two dogs slipped past their owner, Linda Hiemer—perhaps in a moment of excitement over a squirrel—and ended up trapped on a ledge 30 feet down a steep cliff. For two hours, eight-year-old Mia and three-year-old Mattilda waited on that precarious perch.

Seattle launches Station Area Planning Initiative for West Seattle and Delridge Neighborhoods

The City of Seattle’s Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) have officially launched a new Station Area Planning initiative. This effort is specifically focused on the West Seattle Junction and Delridge neighborhoods, aiming to guide growth and development around proposed light rail stations.

As Sound Transit expands light rail across the city, the City is partnering with residents to ensure these areas grow into transit-oriented neighborhoods that are walkable, sustainable, and inclusive. A "station area" generally refers to the neighborhood within a 10-minute walk (approximately a half-mile) of a future station. The planning process will help communities build a shared vision for the future by identifying priorities for infrastructure, housing for all, and a strong local economy.

Amanda Knox shares music video "How strange it is"

Released to accompany documentary about her return to Italy

Amanda Knox has produced an original music video to accompany the documentary about her return to Italy to meet the man who prosecuted her. Mouth of the Wolf: Amanda Knox Returns to Italy is a 2026 Hulu/Disney+ documentary that follows her as she returns to Italy for the first time since her 2015 exoneration. It is not a re‑telling of the Meredith Kercher case; it is a story about confrontation, trauma, accountability, and the unresolved human fallout of a global media spectacle. The documentary’s emotional center is Knox’s face‑to‑face meeting with the prosecutor who pursued her for years.

Kennedy Catholic Lancers win state opener

By Tim Clinton

SPORTS EDITOR

Kennedy Catholic earned a 9 a.m. Thursday return trip to the Tacoma Dome to play Gonzaga Prep by pulling off a 52-49 win over Chiawana in its loser-out state Class 4A girls basketball opener Wednesday morning.

The Lancers trailed by one at 49-48 when Jayden Fitzgerald stole the ball away from the River Hawks, drew a foul and iced both free throws for a sudden 50-49 advantage with 25.1 seconds to play.

Teammate Britain Brooks sealed the deal with a pair of charity tosses with 7.5 seconds left after a missed Chiawana basket at the other end.

"We didn't expect to get the steal on the ball," said Kennedy Catholic head coach Michael Brooks.  "We thought it would be on the pass."

The Lancers looked like they might cruise to victory early, as Paige Nadarski buried three 3-point baskets in a row to turn a 12-12 tie into a 21-12 lead in the second quarter.

King County Council halts detention center expansion to prioritize community health and safety

One year moratorium now in place

The King County Council has approved an emergency one-year moratorium that immediately blocks the acceptance of permits for new or expanded detention facilities in unincorporated King County. Sponsored by Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, the measure prevents the siting of both publicly and privately operated facilities, including potential ICE detention centers.

The ordinance is designed to close regulatory gaps and prevent approvals obtained through "vague or misleading" project descriptions. It ensures that the county’s land and resources are used to foster community resilience rather than systems that "isolate, intimidate, and harm" residents.
