LETTER: Burien Annex closure; Highline Musical Theater responds

Dear Friends,

Today we learned the unfortunate news that the City of Burien will not be renewing our lease at the Annex because the building is being shut down. Inspection of the building resulted in concern over the structural integrity of the building, and issues with many of its systems. While there is no immediate concern for health or safety, the necessary repairs/renovations needed are extensive, and the facility itself does not meet current earthquake code. The Annex tenants need to be out of the building by January 31. This means that we will still be having our Legally Blonde The Musical JR. performances at the Annex, but will be searching for another performance venue for our other DSC productions. Performance dates for those productions may need to be adjusted depending on performance space availability. Rehearsal days and times may also have to be adjusted. Additionally, we will be looking for another location for our dance classes.

Not ready to elect a woman?

By Jean Godden

A friend of mine, a distinguished historian (a guy), recently told me that, no, the Democrats should not -- must not -- nominate a woman for president. He said, "We did that last time and it didn't work out."

My friend is not alone. I keep hearing that women candidates are simply not "electable" and that electability should be the Democrats number one priority. These folks argue that America is not yet ready to "embrace a female candidate."

This line of thinking is disheartening and, frankly, I am still trying to understand if being born male is a prerequisite for a viable candidate. Looking at the evidence, I find valid reasons for doubt. After all, Hillary Clinton got three million more votes than Donald Trump in 2016. Her vote count of 65.8 million gave Hillary the most votes of any presidential candidate in history.

Olympic Manor lights are bright and beautiful near Ballard

The neighborhood near Crown Hill called Olympic Manor has a well deserved reputation for dozens of neighbors who get into the Christmas spirit by putting up elaborate displays that go well beyond just a simple string of lights.

The entrance is on NW 85th St. and 22nd/21st Ave NW or at NW 90th and 24th ave NW.

If you want to take photos of the lights, a quick tip. Don't wait until it's completely dark. Taking pictures around dusk will get you more details and color.

White Center gets its tree lit! Annual celebration honored the late Tommy Martin

Keeping up a community tradition, people from around the White Center community gathered to sing christmas carols, dress  up in silly holiday clothes and celebrate the lighting of the community Christmas Tree at Triangle Park. Just adjacent to Mac's Triangle Pub the event this year was special. It commemorated the passing of Tommy Martin, owner of Speed of Sound Studios whose sudden passing  in October sent shock waves through White Center and beyond. Close friend Tony Lilly set in motion the decoration of the tree with plates, each featuring a photo of Martin from past years.

The White Center Christmas Carolers were there largely in red and white gear doing hearty renditions of several Christmas songs and the event was led by former White Center "Mayor" Christine Spencer who provided the thank you's and did the count down to the lighting.

information from the City of SeaTac

On Friday, December 6th, detectives from the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Major Crimes Unit and the Seattle Police Department’s Robbery Unit arrested an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old male at two separate locations in West Seattle. It is believed that the two suspects arrested are responsible for approximately a dozen armed robberies in West Seattle, Ballard, SeaTac, Burien and White Center over the past several weeks.

Detectives developed information about the possible suspects and made the arrests on Friday afternoon. During the arrest, investigators found a .38 cali- ber revolver in the 18-year-old suspect’s pocket.

Following the arrests, the suspects were booked into the King County Jail and Youth Services Center.

Connections to our friends and family should always come first. But real life is busy and complicated. And there’s never enough time with the people that mean the most to you.

We know that Moments Matter, like:

  • Hugging grandpa the minute he gets off the plane
  • Catching up with your childhood friend on his layover
  • Spending precious moments with your daughter before her deployment
  • Surprising her with flowers at the gate because you can’t wait another minute

With SEA Visitor Pass, you can now enter the post-security side of the airport even if you're not traveling that day.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was the first airport on the West Coast to pilot a post-security visitor program in 2018.
